Free Expression
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS…
The University & College Designers Association exists to promote excellence in visual communications for educational institutions; and
WHEREAS…
The individual members of the Association are engaged in the art of expression and the craft of communications; and
WHEREAS…
The educational institutions for which we labor can fulfill their obligations to their individual charters and to the collective good only when their atmospheres are artistically, intellectually, and emotionally free; and
WHEREAS…
Intellectual and artistic expression is the essence of our efforts — as individual artists and as educational institutions,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED
That the University & College Designers Association, its officers and directors and its individual members hereby pledge to refuse to permit the slow unraveling of the fabric of freedom that is essential nutrient to our thoughts and to the expressions which guide our personal and professional lives.
To this pledge we add more.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED
That because freedom is fundamental — as basic to humankind as is life — we will not allow it to be defined because it is its own definition. No government, no government official, no other human may have the audacity to define freedom for another. We affirm that freedom is absolute. It cannot de dissected, amplified, modified, mitigated, dispensed, or otherwise altered. Freedom defines the very nature of humanity, not the other way around.
Knowing this, we are wary of those who seek to define our freedom; we know that freedom defined is freedom denied.
Because we know also that freedom resides within the essence of every man and women, we understand that each of us bears responsibility for its defense in the face of those who seek to defend it in our names.
IN RECOGNITION OF THESE TRUTHS BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT…
The members of the Association, its officers and directors, will resist encroachment of our expressive freedom and will direct our secretary to hand over this resolution to the President and to the Congress of the United States of America.
Done in the city of Nashville, state of Tennessee, this second day of October, 1990.
