The Kent State University School of Visual Communication Design to honor industry legends and long-time UCDA members j.Charles Walker and John Brett Buchanan at its inaugural Walker-Buchanan Founders Award fundraising dinner on Wednesday, April 8.

The Kent State University School of Visual Communication Design (VCD) will raise money for a new scholarship honoring industry legends [and long-time UCDA members] j.Charles Walker and John Brett Buchanan at its inaugural Walker-Buchanan Founders Award fundraising dinner on Wednesday, April 8, 2015, at the Kent State University Hotel and Conference Center.

"The Walker-Buchanan Founders Award dinner is a way for the School of Visual Communication Design to honor j.Charles Walker, founder and visionary of the school, and John Brett Buchanan, Glyphix creative director and emeritus faculty," Sanda Katila, VCD acting director, said. "The inaugural alumni event is an opportunity for the school to pay tribute to both of these individuals who have inspired generations of students, faculty and alumni through their legacy of excellence."

The school hopes to raise $25,000 to endow the scholarship, which will be awarded annually to students who exhibit academic excellence and outstanding portfolios in graphic design, illustration or photography. Walker and Buchanan's foundation, the jCW+JBB Foundation, will match donations up to $12,500.

Serving as the school’s first director, Walker helped establish VCD as part of Kent State's College of Communication and Information in 2002. Currently, VCD offers degrees in visual communication design and photo-illustration.

Glyphix, which recently celebrated 40 years of design excellence, was founded in 1974. Buchanan was instrumental in its founding, serving as the firm's creative director for nearly 25 years. Today, Glyphix works with a variety of clients and has won more than 40 local and national design awards.

Those interested in attending the Walker-Buchanan Founders Award fundraising dinner should visit the VCD website to purchase tickets, costing $100 per person.
