[ON-DEMAND] Content, Context, and Collaboration
CONTENT, CONTEXT, AND COLLABORATION:
How great assets and working together can take our visual storytelling to a higher level
Get an inside look at how this award-winning team creates their images. Shari and August will share the collaboration process and team approach which focuses on visual storytelling. Topics covered include: the importance of content and context in photography; content precedes design—that design in the absence of content and context is not design but rather decoration. Learn how great designers can embrace the tools (what) and strategies (why) that photographers use in selecting images, so they can choose photos that are the best authentic, powerful, storytelling images and how to use them effectively in their designed products.
About the speakers:
August Miller
August Miller, a Utah native, began his journey in photography when he was just 14 years old when at the urging of his great-grandmother a nationally respected painter and artist. He was told, you see light and shadow with amazing detail, you just can’t draw worth a darn,” and she went in the other room and returned with a camera and the sage advice to “try this.” He has never looked back. August’s long professional career in photography began while he was still in college where he worked full-time as photo editor, sports editor, and photographer for a weekly newspaper as well as a photo stringer for United Press International, The Associated Press, and regional newspapers while still attending classes. After graduation, he spent almost three subsequent decades working as a reporter, photojournalist, photo editor, director of photography and graphics for newspapers and national magazines. He has also worked as a commercial and advertising photographer for national and regional advertising and marketing agencies.
August is currently director of photography at Utah Valley University (UVU) Marketing and Communication Department.
Outside of UVU he is a sought-after speaker and educator on photographic topics.
When not taking photos or reading a good book, he likes to spend time with his wife, three daughters, a son-in law, his granddaughter Sunny, and a cat named Lucy.
Shari Warnick
Shari Warnick has been the art director at Utah Valley University since 2015. After graduating with a BFA in Design from Brigham Young University (BYU), she started her career, working the next six years at BYU Publications and Graphics and teaching adjunct in the design department. Building up her own design agency on the side with her partner pulled her away from higher-ed for the next 25 years. With a focus on design and event production for major corporations, it allowed for a lot of variety and a lot of travel. But when the opportunity arose to come back to higher-ed, she jumped at the chance. Now, she is just a Capstone project away from finishing her Masters in Design Management and Communications at Georgetown.
When Shari is not working, she spends her time skiing at Sundance, hiking or ‘car camping,’ always with an audible book in her ear. Her kids are now in college too, figuring out their own way in life.
