JOHN BALL
Partner/Creative Director, Mires
John Ball is a respected leader in brand development, strategic design and corporate communications. A partner in the San Diego-based brand consulting and visual design firm Mires, founded in 1985, John views strategic design as a powerful business tool. His twenty-plus years of experience building brands is exemplified through numerous campaigns that balance strategic, practical thinking with an intuitive creative approach. John has led high-profile projects for clients including Starbucks, Intel, Jabra, SEGA, Gateway, Pelican, Nike and Rubio's.
John has authored articles on the business applications of branding and design and has been published in numerous books on corporate identity and graphic design. He holds membership in the American Institute of Graphic Arts/AIGA and serves on the Board of Directors of the Lux Art Institute, an innovative new museum under development in North San Diego County.
VALERIE SLOAN
Educator, Belmont University
Valerie Sloan joined Belmont's design communications program in 2001 with more than 12 years of professional design experience and several years of teaching in both liberal arts and university settings. Her recent endeavors have led to exploration in storytelling, narrative, information architecture and identity. Valerie's passion for typography and design history is shared with students in those courses and other design core classes. She is the current charter president for the Nashville chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts and the former charter president for AIGA Orlando.
CHERYL TOWLER WEESE
Partner, Studio Blue
Cheryl Towler Weese began her design discipleship at age nine, when she learned to proofread galleys at her parents' weekly newspaper. She is a partner at Studio Blue, where her primary responsibilities include serving as lead designer and mentoring other designers, managing internal operations, financial planning, and marketing. She founded the studio in 1993 as a sole proprietor. She is currently on the National Board of the AIGA, and has taught and lectured on design at several universities, at AIGA and ACD local and national conferences, and for the College Art Association; and she served on the jury of the AIGA's 50 Books/50 Covers competition in 2000.
