Opening Keynote (1)
40 Years of Design Education and Promotion at the School of Visual Arts
Saturday, October 2, 7:30-9 p.m.
Richard Wilde, School of Visual Arts
- At SVA, Richard founded a department that incorporated a conceptually driven foundation in design and advertising that led to an array of promotional material that has rendered remarkable results for the school.
- Richard Wilde wears many hats. But he doesn't just wear them. He fills them. Currently, his hat rack boasts positions like chair of the Graphic Design and Advertising departments and teacher at the School of Visual Arts, a principal of Wilde Design, the creator of Experimental Creativity workshops and an international lecturer. For his work, Richard has collected over 200 professional awards, including gold medals from the New York Art Directors Club, One Show, Andys, AIGA, CLIOS and D&AD, Creativity and Society of Illustrators. Not to mention two bowling trophies from the AIGA. But none of these achievements have gotten in the way of his other important roles. For Richard is also a loving husband, father, brother, son and according to Critique magazine, "The Guru of Graphic Design Thinking."

- Glenn John Arnowitz is director of Creative Services at Pfizer, a research-based, global pharmaceutical company, where he manages an award-winning team of six designers. He has contributed to HOW magazine, GD:USA, Dynamic Graphics, Step InSide Design, Wierd New Jersey, The Creative Group's publications, and the books, Bringing Design In-House, and In House Design In Practice. Glenn has spoken at the HOW Design Conference, the InHOWse Designer Conference, the Parenting Publishers of America Conference, the Thinking Creatively Conference at Kean University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). He has served on the Board of Distinguished Judges and Advisors for the American Business Awards. As co-founder of InSource (www.in-source.org), Glenn is passionately committed to helping in-house creatives achieve design excellence and recognition within their companies and the business community.

- As the need for integrated communication between print and digital campaigns rises, what is your place as a designer and how do you bridge the gap between the two? We'll explore the opportunities of digital communication and how to make your institution's marketing work together in a strategic and cohesive manner.
- Brad J. Ward is the CEO at BlueFuego, Inc, an international higher education consulting firm. He has spoken around the globe at over 75 higher ed conferences and workshops, including recent events in Dubai, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia. His work has been featured in magazines and websites such as Campus Technology, University Business, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, Wired, CNET, New York Times and more. He holds an MBA with a concentration in Leadership from Butler University. Prior to starting BlueFuego (www.bluefuego.com), Brad was the electronic communication coordinator in the Office of Admission at Butler. Featured School: Century College--From Ugly Duckling to Nice Looking Brand

Mark S. Vukelich, Century College
- This session will take you through the entire process of creating a new mission, vision, values and identity for your college. You will learn how to get campus-wide buy-in and answers to questions like "who are we?" and "what type of an image are we portraying with our current identity?"
- Mark S. Vukelich possess over twenty-five years of experience in marketing, branding, advertising, public relations, media relations and government relations. The majority of Mark's career has focused on healthcare marketing. His experiences include working for the Minnesota Medical Association for ten years and as the marketing director for two of the largest healthcare organizations in Minnesota--Fairview Health Services and HealthPartners. Skilled in government relations and media relations, he also served four years in Governor Al Quie's administration. Mark is going on his fifth year as director of marketing for Century College and enjoys the challenges that come with marketing a public college.

- NBA In-House: A Case Study of All-Star

Julie de Jesus-Evans, National Basketball Association
- In-house professionals have an advantage at controlling a cohesive branding plan and design. Learn how the NBA branding agency develops the core branding for the annual NBA All-Star, and it's broad extension through a varitey of media, while facing the same challenges as in-house designers everywhere.
- As vice president of Creative Services for NBA Entertainment, Julie de Jesus-Evans plays a key role in the league's in-house branding agency. The department oversees all collateral, marketing, and event creative, including large-scale building wraps, event graphics and signage, invitation and ticket design, on-air promos, posters, digital ads, website graphics, and interactive games for prominent league events, including All-Star, playoffs, and The Finals. Among other projects, Julie develops creative briefs to assure branding cohesion across all media, most recently for All-Star 2011 in Los Angeles. She also led the relaunch of all NBA team sites in 2009 and built and brought the league's broadcast graphics room in house. Prior to her promotion to vice president, Julie held positions as creative director, multimedia producer, and interactive designer. She joined the NBA in 1995 after spending three years as a freelance designer.
