- To celebrate its 40th anniversary, UCDA is publishing the 1970s volume of the UCDA Design Collection, an overview of the growing collection of work being produced by and for educational institutions. The pieces from the collection have won in the UCDA Design Competition, now in its 41st year.
- UCDA Design Collection: 1971-1979 highlights the first decade of work from the UCDA Design Collection. The collection currently documents more than 5,000 award winning entries ranging from printed posters and publications, to videos and websites from 1971 through today.
- Be inspired by this 176-page pocket-sized volume, containing an introductory essay, a chronological overview of winners from 1971-1979 and a showcase of almost 100 of these winning pieces.
- The essay authored by j.Charles Walker looks back at graphic design from the era, as well as some of the winning pieces that are part of the collection. "I was struck by the overriding importance of conceptual problem solving, simplicity of layout and imagery, and the creative use of typography to get across a complete message," writes Walker. "It was a time before the random placing of unreadable typography and unrelated visual noise of the late 90s and early 2000s."
- Walker is professor emeritus and former director of the School of Visual Communications at Kent State University. An emeritus member of UCDA, he served as president in 1978.
