The Goldstein Museum of Design at the University of Minnesota is known for strong collections in apparel design, historic costume, textiles, and some decorative arts. The works span two-thirds of the twentieth century and include the publications PM (later A-D), Portfolio, Push Pin Graphic, Dot Zero, Octavo, Emigre, Fuse, Zed, News of the Whirled and the exhibitions And She Told 2 Friends and Soul Design. Original artifacts will be on display and Steven McCarthy will discuss their relevance to graphic design history.
Studios in surface design (screen printing and fabric dyeing) and letterpress printing (with hand-set metal and wooden type, and relief blocks) will be accessible for hands-on experiences. Some of the wooden letterforms are well over a century old and are on loan from the Hamilton Wood Type Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. University faculty and students will be on hand. Participants will leave with printed works of their own creation.

Triple Treat: Museum Tour Optional Pre-con ($)
Spend the morning visiting three of Minneapolis' well-known art destinations. Masterpieces at the Minneapolis Institute of Art from every age and culture await your discovery. A collection of more than 70,000 objects makes this museum the most complete artistic and cultural experience in the Upper Midwest.
The Walker Art Center, formally established in 1927, began as the first public art gallery in the Upper Midwest. The museum's focus on modern art began in the 1940s, when a gift from Mrs. Gilbert Walker made possible the acquisition of works by important artists of the day, including sculptures by Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore, Alberto Giacometti, and others.
Located on the grounds of the Walker is the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, the largest urban sculpture garden in the nation. These eleven acres of garden feature over 40 sculptures on permanent view, dating from the early 20th century to the present, varying in size and styles, and highlighted by the Spoonbridge and Cherry.
Fee: $40. Includes transportation and admission to the museums. Pre-registration required and space is limited to 40 participants.
